Warren Jay Hughes

January 13, 1939 — July 3, 2024

Mesquite

Warren Jay Hughes passed away on Wednesday, 3 July 2024 at the age of 85 in the Mesa View Hospital, Mesquite, Nevada. He was born on Friday 13 January 1939 to Mathew Dee Hughes and Lois Judd Hughes and is the fourth of six children. He was born in St. George UT at the McGregor Hospital. He is the brother to Charles DeMar, Karla Jean, Myron Judd, Derald Eli, Bonita (Bonnie), and Arvil Creston.

Warren enjoyed growing up in Mesquite where he attended school, worked, and met his future wife. He married Marie Jane Hardy of LaVerkin Utah on 12 December 1959 in the St. George Utah Temple. Growing up he liked to drive the tractor and plow fields on the Hughes Dairy Farm in Mesquite and enjoyed driving the milk tanker truck from Mesquite and Moapa to Las Vegas after attending Dixie Junior College in St. George. Later he moved to Las Vegas and worked at the Blue Dimond plasterboard company. After Blue Dimond had a layoff in 1961, he went to work for the Nevada State Highway Department for over 30 years and retired in 1995. Warren and his family were able to move many times all around Nevada as they were building the highways during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Some places include Carlin, Elko, Winnemucca, McDermitt, Lovelock, Tonopah, Las Vegas, Mesquite, and Cedar City.

Warren has always been an active and strong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was able to serve a Couples Service Mission and a variety of other assignments in the places he lived. Warren was the type of person everyone liked. He was easy to get along with, was a soft spoken and gentle man, was always willing and able to lend a hand helping someone, and he loved to share his knowledge and life experiences with family and friends.

He is survived by his spouse Marie Jane Hughes (Mesquite NV), and his five children: Robert & Tonya (Roy UT); DeLois & Lyle Judd (Cedar City UT); Quint & KayDawn (Lovelock NV); Ranata J. Hughes (Pheonix AZ); Leona B. Hughes-Peel (Pelham AL); 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; his brother’s Myron, Derald, and his sister Karla. He was preceded in death by his Father (Dee), Mother (Lois), Brother’s (Arvil, DeMar) and Sister (Bonita).
