Cynthia Naomi Smith

Cynthia Johnson Maeder Smith was born August 14, 1918 in Eakley, Oklahoma to James Luther Johnson and Mabel Clair Buck.

Cynthia went home to her Heavenly Father on May 27, 2015 from Caliente Long-Term Care.

On January 1936 Cynthia married Edward Joseph Maeder in Pioche, Nevada. To this union nine children were born and raised in Caliente: Jean Bond (Arnie), Joseph (Betty Rose), Jerry (Chris), Shirley Patterson (Jerry), Ann Williams (Bill), Delores Winters (Mike), Bobby, Betty and Thomas.

In 1954 Cynthia she was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a teacher of the 12-year-old Sunday school class. She then moved to Battle Mountain, Nevada with her daughter and son-in-law Ann and Bill Williams. In October 2004 she moved to Caliente, Nevada with Ann and Bill.

Cynthia enjoyed going to the temple, reading the Bible, watching baseball, working on word puzzles and search-and-find books and enjoyed doing math until she started losing her eyesight.

While living in Caliente, she was active in the church and went to the St. George Temple as much as she could with Tonya and Brent Perkins and her daughter Ann.

On July 9, 2008 Cynthia, at 90 years old, and Martha Bleak, at 96 years old, made Caliente church history by being the first two residents of the Long-Term Care at Grover C. Dils Medical Center to become a visiting teacher to other long-term care residents.

She is survived by her children, Jean Bond, Joe, Jerry, Shirley and Ann; her grandchildren Alesia Maeder, Colleen Maeder, Annette Lemmon Rucker, Amalee Rucker and Rose Marie; daughters-in-law Betty Rose Black Maeder, Judy Ann Ence Maeder and Glenda Baker Maeder.

Cynthia is preceded in death by her parents and children Delores, Betty, Bobby and Tommy.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Caliente LDS Church under the direction of the Southern Nevada Mortuary. Interment will be in the Caliente Cemetery.
